Joy Evans Therapeutic Recreation Center

3030 G St, SE
Washington, DC 20019

DLR Group's design for the Joy Evans Therapeutic Recreation Center uses its location adjacent to a wooded stream valley of the National Park Service to harness the therapeutic benefits of the natural landscape. The building seamlessly connects the interior and exterior spaces through organic materials and extensive views from major public areas. By strategically incorporating recesses in the façade, the building's perceived size is reduced, and a rhythmic pattern is introduced, harmonizing with the environment. The sloping roofs with deep overhangs not only provide solar protection but also visually integrate the building into the residential neighborhood's lower scale.

In collaboration with the District of Columbia's Department of Parks and Recreation, this project encompasses the development of a 36,000 SF recreation center, accompanied by comprehensive site improvements. The primary focus is on therapeutic recreation, catering to individuals of all ages and varying physical and cognitive abilities. Key elements include an indoor natatorium with a warm water therapy pool and spa, a gymnasium, fitness room, wellness studio, a spacious multipurpose room featuring a kitchen, a senior room, a technology lounge, and activity rooms. The exterior amenities comprise playgrounds, a splash pad, a multi-sport field and court, a sensory garden, and a community garden connected by an intricate network of trails throughout the site. The project is designed to adhere to the USGBC LEED Silver certification standards, with an unwavering commitment to biophilic and universal design principles. DLR Group provided architecture, engineering, planning, and interior design.
